She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan begot Sheba and Dedan. The descendants of Dedan were the Asshurim, the Letushim, and the Leummim. The descendants of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Enoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah. Abraham willed all that he owned to Isaac; but to Abraham s sons by concubines Abraham gave gifts while he was still living, and he sent them away from his son Isaac eastward, to the land of the East. Commentary of Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo ben Yitzhak: 1040-1105): א ק טוּר ה. This was Hagar, so nicknamed because all of her deed were as fragrant as incense ט ר ת),( ketoret -ק and because she kept her entrance closed keshurah) she -קּ שׁ ר had not coupled with any other man since she had parted ה) from Abraham.
Commentary of Rashbam (Rabbi Samuel ben Meir 1085-1174): 1. Keturah. According to a straightforward reading of the text, this is not Hagar. Commentary of Abarbanel (Don Isaac Abarbanel (1437-1508): 1. Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. It is extremely strange that Abraham would take another wife and have six children with her at his advanced age. No doubt that is what led the Sages to conclude this was Hagar, which would make it a little less strange. But I presume it was the Holy One who prompted him to do this, so that he could fulfill the promise God made it in 17:6, I will make nations of you. And it would stop Ishmael from being so proud of being Abraham s son and from thinking he could split the inheritance with Isaac. Now he would be just another son. Keturah was no doubt a Canaanite (or a Philistine, or an Egyptian), but that did not matter. Isaac s mother, and Isaac s wife, through whom the Covenant would be carried on, were from Abraham s own family and his country, and that was all that mattered. The second wife was just for himself. Commentary of Radak (Rabbi David Kimchi: 1160?-1235?): 6. While he was still living. So that there would be no dispute over the inheritance after his death. He sent them away from his son Isaac. So that they would not quarrel with him or be a burden to him. And Abraham breathed his last, dying at a good ripe age, old and contented; and he was gathered to his kin. His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, facing Mamre, the field that Abraham had bought from the Hittites; there Abraham was buried, and Sarah his wife. After the death of Abraham, God blessed his son Isaac. And Isaac settled near Beer-lahai-roi. Commentary of Ibn Ezra (Rabbi Abraham ibn Ezra 1091/92-1167): 8. He was gathered to his kin. Some say that this refers to the soul being gathered to its kin, since it is really something separate from the body. When it parts from the body at last, it can be gathered once more to its kin. Others think that this is simply an idiom meaning that the person has, Gone the way of his kin literally, as the Hebrew says, Of his fathers, as if he were now rejoining them. Indeed, Abraham was told, You shall go to your fathers in peace. (15:15) Commentary of Nachmanides (Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman: 1195?-1270): ח זקן ושבע.
8. Old and contented. He had gotten everything he asked for, and all his wants were completely satisfied. The fuller phrase is to be, Contented with days, as is Isaac in 35:29. He was not waiting for the coming days to bring him anything else did not already have. 1 Chron. 29:28 says something similar of David. That is teh story of God s kindness to the righteous: You have granted him the desire of his heart. (Ps. 21:3) Whatever they do not need, they do not desire. It is not so with others: A lover of money never has his fill of money. (Eccles. 5:9) It is of this later kind of person that the Sages said, No one leaves this world with half his desires fulfilled. If he had 100 minas, he wants 200. When he gets the 200, he wants to turn them into 400. (Kohelet Rabbah 1:13) In Genesis Rabbah 62:2, the Sages were moved to tell us that the Holy One shows the righteous the rewards that await them in the World to Come, which satisfies their desires; then they simply fall asleep. These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the first-born of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedmah. These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names by their villages and by their encampments: twelve chieftains of as many tribes. These were the years of the life of Ishmael: one hundred and thirty-seven years; then he
breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his kin. They dwelt from Havilah, by Shur, which is close to Egypt, all the way to Asshur; they camped alongside all their kinsmen. 12. Abraham s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah s slave, bore to Abraham. That is, he was not a son in the sense of being an heir; he was the son of a slave. Contrast, This is the story of Isaac, son of Abraham. Abraham begot Isaac. (25:19) It was Isaac who was, The generation of Abraham. Compare, This is the line of Perez: Perez begot Hezron (Ruth 4:18) and so forth, where the line (in Hebrew, the same as the Generation of 25:19) is the line that will lead to David.
