Ba-ruch A-tah, A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu, Me-lech ha-o-lam, a-sher ki-d'sha-nu b'mitz-vo-tav, v'tzi-va-nu l'had-lik ner shel cha-nu-kah. Praised are You, Eternal our God, Ruler of the universe, who makes us holy through Your mitzvot, and who commands us to kindle the Chanukah lights.

We light these lights for the miracles and the wonders, for the redemption and the battles that You made for our ancestors in those days at this season of the year, through Your holy priests. During all eight days of Chanukah these lights are sacred and we are not permitted to make ordinary use of them, but rather only to look at them, in order to express thanks and praise to Your great Name for your miracles, Your wonders and your salvations.

Rock of ages, let our song praise Your saving power; You, amid the raging foes, were our sheltering tower. Furious, they assailed us, but Your arm availed us, And Your word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us.

As these Shabbat candles give light to all who behold them, so may we, by our lives, give light to all who behold us. As their brightness reminds us of the generations of Israel who have kindled light, so may we, in our own day, be among those who kindle light.

And there was evening and there was morning the sixth day. The Heaven and the Earth were finished, and all their array. On the seventh day God finished the work that God had been doing, and God ceased on the seventh day from all the work that God had done. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because on it God ceased from all the work of creation that God had done.

I begin with a prayer of gratitude for all that is good in my life. God needs no words, no English or Hebrew, no semantics and no services. But I need them. Through prayer, I can sense my inner strength, my inner purpose, my inner joy, my capacity to love.

Sing the song of men and women joined in understanding and respect. The song of God s miracles, an earth protected and cherished: a gift for our children and the generations to come. The song of a land once ravaged by war, now quiet and content; her soldiers home, to leave no more. The song of a world redeemed: The song of peace.

In a world where the weak were tormented by oppressors, our Torah taught us to love the poor and the stranger. A heritage of justice has come down to us. Where the sword was sovereign, we were commanded to seek peace and pursue it. A heritage of peace has come down to us. All this now is ours. Ours the teaching, ours the task, to make the heritage live. For it is our life, and the length of our days. בּ ר ו ך א ת ה י י, מ ח יּ ה ה כּ ל. Baruch atah, Adonai, m chayei hakol.
Days pass and the years vanish, and we walk sightless among miracles. God, fill our eyes with seeing and our minds with knowing; let there be moments when Your Presence, like lightning, illumines the darkness in which we walk. Help us to see, wherever we gaze, that the bush burns unconsumed. And we, clay touched by God, will reach out for holiness, and exclaim in wonder: How filled with awe is this place, and we did not know it! Praise to You Adonai, the Holy God! Everpresent One, may we, Your people Israel, be worthy in our deeds and our prayer. Who can retell the things that befell us, Who can count them? In every age a hero or sage Came to our aid. Hark! In days of yore, in Israel's ancient land, Brave Maccabeus led his faithful band. And now all Israel must as one arise, Redeem itself through deed and sacrifice!
