It has been said: You shall keep the flame burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out. In this spirit we would keep alive within us the flame of faith. And in this spirit we kindle the lights of Simchat Torah.

In Jewish tradition it is not enough to think a day is holy; we make it holy through action, by saying a blessing over wine and thanking God for the holiday.

We have heard the sound of the Shofar calling us to reawakening.
We have fasted and prayed, and considered our lives and our deeds.
We have given thanks for the harvest, and peered heavenward through the sukkah's spaces.
Now our cycle ends and begins again, with song and dance, as to our hearts we clasp our tree of life.
The more we hold the Torah close, the more it lifts us up. We will be glad and we will rejoice.

With the setting of the sun, Simchat Torah begins, and a month of holidays which began with Rosh Hashanah comes to an end. We have celebrated new beginnings a new year, a new harvest, a new reading of the Torah. We are about to read the story of creation. But the creation of the world is not finished. It goes on every day. Each day we help to create the world: at work, at play, at school. For the Jewish people, creation and Torah have no end. ב רוּ ך א ת ה י י, ה מּ ע ר יב ע ר ב ים. We learn what to do from You, God. Your love and Your Torah teach us what is right and what is good. Days pass and the years vanish, and we walk sightless among miracles. And we, clay touched by God, will reach out for holiness, and exclaim in wonder: How filled with awe is this place, and we did not know it! On Simchat Torah we rejoice in God s greatest gift to us, the Torah. We dance and sing for joy. We finish reading the Torah, and we begin reading it all over again. Torah means teachings. The Torah teaches through laws, stories, songs, and poems. When we study Torah, we learn how God wishes us to live. Our tradition teaches that the Torah was given only once on Mt. Sinai. But each of us receives Torah whenever we read it.

May we gain wisdom in our lives, overflowing like a river with understanding. Loved each of us, for the peace we bring to others. May our deeds exceed our speech, and may we never lift up our hand but to conquer fear and doubt and despair. Rise up like the sun, O God, over all humanity. Cause light to go forth over all the lands between the seas, and light up the universe with the joy of wholeness, of freedom and of peace.

We recall the loved ones whom death has recently taken from us, those who died at this season, and those whom we have taken into our hearts with our own...the memories of all our dear ones are with us; we also remember with love the Six Million.
