Noah was a righteous man; he was blameless in his age; Noah walked with God. Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The Earth became corrupt before God; the Earth was filled with lawlessness. When God saw how corrupt the Earth was, for all flesh had corrupted its ways on Earth, God said to Noah, I have decided to put an end to all flesh, for the Earth is filled with lawlessness because of them: I am about to destroy them with the Earth. Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make it an ark with compartments, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you shall make it: the length of the Ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, and its height thirty cubits. Make an opening for daylight in the Ark, and terminate it within a cubit of the top. Put the entrance to the Ark in its side; make it with bottom, second, and third decks. 9. In his age. Some of our Sages explain that this was said in praise of Noah. Even in his corrupt generation he was righteous. How much the more righteous he would have been in a righteous age! Others think it is intended to disparage Noah. In his own generation Noah was the most righteous, but in Abraham s generation Noah would have been considered a nothing. Commentary of Nachmanides (Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman: 1195?-1270): יב כי השחית כל בשר את דרכו. אם נפרש כל בשר כמשמעו, ונאמר שאפילו בהמה וחיה ועוף השחיתו דרכם להזקק לשאינן מינן, כמו שפירש רש"י, נאמר כי מלאה הארץ חמס מפניהם, לא מפני כולם אלא מפני מקצתם, וסיפר עונש האדם לבדו. או שנאמר שלא שמרו גם בזה תולדתם, והיתה כל הבהמה טורפת וכל העוף דורס. והנה גם הם עושים חמס: ועל דרך הפשט "כל בשר" זה כל האדם, ולמטה יפרש כל בשר אשר בו רוח חיים (להלן ז טו), ומכל החי ומכל בשר (להלן פסוק יט), כל חי בגוף, אבל בכאן "כל בשר" כל האדם: 12. For all flesh had corrupted its ways on Earth. If we take all flesh literally, we would have to say, as does Rashi that even the birds and beasts were having intercourse outside their species. Do we then say that, The Earth is filled with lawlessness because of them, (v. 13) refers only to some of them (the humans from whose perspective the actual punishment is descried), or do we say that even with regard to lawlessness all flesh was guilty, the beasts being all carnivorous and the birds all birds of prey? But in a straightforward reading, All flesh refers to all of humanity. Admittedly, both v. 19 and 7:15 use all flesh to refer to animals as well, but they say so explicitly; in our verse without additional specification, it refers to human beings only. But I will establish My covenant with you, and you shall enter the Ark, with your sons, your wife, and your sons wives. And of all that lives, of all flesh, you shall take two of each into the ark to keep alive with you; they shall be male and female. From birds of every kind, cattle of every kind, every kind of creeping thing on Earth, two of each shall come to you to stay alive. For your part, take of everything that is eaten and store it away, to serve as food for you and for them. Noah did so; just as God commanded him, so he did. The Flood. The Hebrew mabul hints that the Flood wrecked everything (billah), muddled everything (bilbel), and brought everything (hobil) to ruin., washing everything down to the bottom. In fact, when the waters drained out, all those who died in the Flood were washed down to Babylonia, which is a low point. Commentary of Nachmanides: כל בשר וגו'. ידוע כי החיות רבות מאד, ומהן גדולות מאד כפילים וכראמים וזולתם, והרמש הרומש על הארץ רב מאד. גם מעוף השמים מינים רבים אין להם מספר, וכמו שאמרו רבותינו (חולין סג:) מאה ועשרים מיני עופות טמאים יש במזרח וכלם מין איה הם, ולעופות טהורים אין מספר. והנה יצטרך להביא מכלם שיולידו כמותם. וכאשר תאסוף לכלם מאכל אשר יאכל לשנה תמימה, לא תכיל אותם התיבה הזאת, ולא עשר כיוצא בה. אבל הוא נס, החזיק מועט את המרובה: ואם תאמר יעשנה קטנה ויסמך על הנס הזה. ראה השם יתברך
לעשותה גדולה כדי שיראו אותה בני דורו ויתמהו בה ויספרו עליה וידברו בענין המבול וכנוס הבהמה והחיה והעוף לתוכה, אולי יעשו תשובה. 19. And of all that lives, of all flesh, you shall take two of each. It is well known that there are many species of animal, some of them as big as oxen and elephants, along with innumerable species of birds and insects. As the Sages said, There are 120 species of unclean birds in the east alone, each of which is one variety or another of falcon. As for the clean birds, they are innumerable." And Noah would have to get two of each of them, not to mention enough food to feed them for a year. Ten arks could not contain them all! But the actual Ark was miraculous; its interior was much larger that its exterior. You might think God would have made it even smaller, relying on this miracle but the Holy One wanted it big enough to make the others of Noah s generation wonder about it. God wanted them to discuss the Flood and the gathering of the animals, hoping they would repent. Of every clean animal you shall take seven pairs, males and their mates, and of every animal that is not clean, two, a male and its mate; of the birds of the sky also, seven pairs, male and female, to keep seed alive upon all the earth. For in seven days time I will make
it rain upon the earth, forty days and forty nights, and I will blot out from the earth all existence that I created. And Noah did just as God commanded him. Noah was six hundred years old when the Flood came, waters upon the earth. Noah, with his sons, his wife, and his sons wives, went into the ark because of the waters of the Flood. Of the clean animals, of the animals that are not clean, of the birds, and of everything that creeps on the ground, two of each, male and female, came to Noah into the ark, as God had commanded Noah. And on the Seventh Day the waters of the Flood came upon the earth. Commentary of Radak (Rabbi David Kimchi: 1160?-1235?): מכל הבהמה הטהורה תקח לך, ומה שאמר שבאו שבעה שבעה מן הטהורים ושנים מן הטמאים לא לעשות קרבן בצאת נח מן התבה לבד, שאם כן די לו בפחות משבעה, כי לא ראינו שהקריב נח אלא פעם אחת, ואם הקריב יותר יוכל להקריב מן הנולדים מהם לשנה או לשנתים או יותר, אלא מה שרצה האל להשאיר מן הטהורה שבעה כדי שיאכלו מהם נח ובניו הבאים אחריהם, שהרבה מיני הטהורים לפי שהיה רוצה להתיר לו בשר לאכול מה שלא התיר לאדם שלפניו. ואע"פ שלא מנע ממנו שום בשר מהטמאים כמו שאמר "כל בשר אשר הוא חי לכם יהיה לאכלה" עד שמנעה מבני ישראל הקדושים, אעפ"כ לפי הטבע הטהורות טובות יותר למאכל בני אדם מהטמאות, וברוב לא יאכלו בני אדם בשאר האומות הטמאים אלא מפני הרעב. 2. Of every clean animal you shall take seven pairs. The seven pairs were not all for Noah to offer up when he came out of the Ark. Fewer than seven pairs would have been plenty, since we do not see him offering sacrifice more than once. If he did indeed offer sacrifice again, after a year or two he could have brought the offerings from the offspring of the animals he took onto the Ark. In fact, the Holy One intended the seven pairs of clean animals to provide food for Noah and his descendants, since at this point God intended to permit the eating of meat, which had previously been forbidden. People were certainly not forbidden to eat the unclean animals until that prohibition was given to the Israelites (see 9:3). But the clean animals are generally better for human beings to eat, and indeed even the other nations do not generally eat the unclean animals except for hunger.
Commentary of Hizkuni (Rabbi Hizkuni ben Manoah mid-13th Century): 9. Two of each, male and female. There were enough to make five offerings one for him, one for his wife, and one for each of his three sons and to have two males left over to propagate the species. That same day Noah and Noah s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, went into the Ark, with Noah s wife and the three wives of his sons they and all beasts of every kind, all cattle of every kind, all creatures of every kind that creep on the Earth, and all birds of every kind, every bird, every winged thing. They came to Noah into the Ark, two each of all flesh in which there was breath of life. Thus they that entered comprised male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him. And the Eternal One shut them in. The waters swelled and increased greatly upon the Earth, and the Ark drifted upon the waters. When the waters had swelled much more upon the Earth, all the highest mountains everywhere under the sky were covered. Fifteen cubits higher did the waters swell, as the mountains were covered. And all flesh that stirred on Earth perished birds, cattle, beasts, and all the things that swarmed upon the Earth, and all mankind. All in whose nostrils was the merest breath of life, all that was on dry land, died. All existence on Earth was blotted out man, cattle, creeping things, and birds of the sky; they were blotted out from the Earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the Ark. Commentary of Radak: ויגוע וגו' וכל האדם, אמר וכל האדם באחרונה, כלומר אפילו אדם שיש לו דעת ותחבולה להשמר מהרע, והיה להם להעלות על ההרים הגבוהים לא הועילה להם תחבולותם, כי חמש עשרה אמה מעל ההרים גברו המים, ואמר וכל שאפילו הנפילים שנשגבו בהרים הגבוהים כסו המים וטבעו בהם, והגויעה היא מיתה מהרה בלא שום אריכות וכן הוא הטובע במים: 21. And all flesh that stirred on Earth perished. The Hebrew word implies a rapid death, not one that is long and drawn out. Death by drowning occurs in this rapid fashion. And all mankind. Mankind is mentioned last, for greatest impact. Even the human beings, who might have been thought clever enough to save themselves their cleverness was not enough to save them. Fifteen cubits of water above the highest mountains was enough to ensure that all mankind drowned, even the Nephilim, the giants.
