They named him Obed; he was the father of Jesse, father of David. Samuel I 16:1-13 And God said to Samuel, How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and set out; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have decided on one of his sons to be king. Invite Jesse to the sacrificial feast, and then I will make known to you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I point out to you. Thus Jesse presented seven of his sons before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, God has not chosen any of these. Then Samuel asked Jesse, Are these all the boys you have? He replied, There is still the youngest; he is tending the flock. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send someone to bring him, for we will not sit down to eat until he gets here. So they sent and brought him. He was ruddy-cheeked, bright-eyed, and handsome. And God said, Rise and anoint him, for this is the one. Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of God gripped David from that day on. Samuel then set out for Ramah. 4. Samuel I 17:55-58 When Saul saw David going out to assault the Philistine, he asked his army commander Abner, Whose son is that boy, Abner? And Abner replied, By your life, Your Majesty, I do not know. Then find out whose son that young fellow is, the king ordered. So when David returned after killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him to Saul, with the head of the Philistine still in his hand. Saul said to him, Whose son are you, my boy? And David answered, The son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite. 1
5. Rashi Did he not recognize him? Is it not stated, "He loved him very much and he became his arms bearer"? But, he saw him behaving in a kingly manner. Do'eg said to him, 'Before you ask whether or not he is descended from a family which qualifies him for the throne, ask whether or not he is qualified to enter into the congregation because he is descended from Rus the Mo'avite.' Malbim Since Shaul had promised to marry his daughter to the one who conquered the Pelishti, once David volunteered to fight it occurred to Shaul that he might need to fulfill his vow. He therefore immediately looked after the honor of his family and asked about David s lineage and qualities (not his father s name). Samuel I 25:10-11 Nabal answered David s servants, Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many slaves nowadays who run away from their masters. Should I then take my bread and my water, and the meat that I slaughtered for my own shearers, and give them to men who come from I don t know where? 8. Rashi Who is Dovid. Samuel I 18:17-23 17 And Saul said to David: 'Behold my elder daughter. יז ו יּ אמ ר שׁ אוּל א ל-דּ ו ד, ה נּ ה ב תּ י ה גּ דוֹל ה מ ר ב Merab, will I give thee to wife 18 And David said to Saul: א ת הּ א תּ ן-ל ל א שּׁ ה- יח ו יּ אמ ר דּ ו ד א ל-שׁ אוּל, 'Who am I, and what is my life, or my father's family in מ י א נ כ י וּמ י ח יּ י, מ שׁ פּ ח ת א ב י, בּ י שׂ ר א ל--כּ י- Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?' 19 But it א ה י ה ח ת ן, ל מּ ל. טי ו י ה י, בּ ע ת תּ ת א ת-מ ר ב came to pass at the time when Merab Saul's daughter בּ ת-שׁ אוּל--ל ד ו ד; ו ה יא נ תּ נ ה ל ע ד ר יא ל ה מּ ח ל ת י, should have been given to David, that she was given unto ל א שּׁ ה.כ ו תּ א ה ב מ יכ ל בּ ת-שׁ אוּל, א ת-דּ ו ד; ו יּ גּ דוּ Adriel the Meholathite to wife. 20 And Michal Saul's ל שׁ אוּל, ו יּ שׁ ר ה דּ ב ר בּ ע ינ יו.כב ו י צ ו שׁ אוּל א ת- daughter loved David; and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him...22 And Saul commanded his servants: ע ב ד ו, דּ בּ רוּ א ל-דּ ו ד בּ לּ ט ל אמ ר, ה נּ ה ח פ ץ בּ 'Speak with David secretly, and say: Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee; now ה מּ ל, ו כ ל-ע ב ד יו א ה בוּ ; ו ע תּ ה, ה ת ח תּ ן בּ מּ ל.כג ו י ד בּ רוּ ע ב ד י שׁ אוּל, בּ א ז נ י ד ו ד, א ת- therefore be the king's son-in-law.' 23 And Saul's servants ה דּ ב ר ים, ה א לּ ה; ו יּ אמ ר דּ ו ד, ה נ ק לּ ה ב ע ינ יכ ם spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said: Is it to you a light thing to be the king's son-in-law, seeing ה ת ח תּ ן בּ מּ ל, ו א נ כ י, א ישׁ-ר שׁ ו נ ק ל ה. that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

Samuel II 6 יד ו ד ו ד מ כ ר כּ ר בּ כ ל-ע ז, ל פ נ י י הו ה; ו ד ו ד, 14 And David danced before God with all his might; and David ח גוּר א פוֹד בּ ד. טז ו ה י ה א רוֹן י הו ה, בּ א was girded with a linen ephod. 16 And it was so, as the ark ע יר דּ ו ד; וּמ יכ ל בּ ת-שׁ אוּל נ שׁ ק פ ה בּ ע ד of God came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter ה ח לּוֹן, ו תּ ר א א ת-ה מּ ל דּ ו ד מ פ זּ ז וּמ כ ר כּ ר of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping ל פ נ י י הו ה, ו תּ ב ז לוֹ, בּ ל בּ הּ.... כ ו יּ שׁ ב דּ ו ד, heart and dancing before God; and she despised him in her 20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal ל ב ר א ת-בּ יתוֹ; ו תּ צ א מ יכ ל בּ ת-שׁ אוּל, the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said: 'How honored the king of Israel is today, who uncovered himself to- י שׂ ר א ל א שׁ ר נ ג ל ה ה יּוֹם ל ע ינ י א מ הוֹת ע ב ד יו, day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of ל ק ר את דּ ו ד, ו תּ אמ ר מ ה-נּ כ בּ ד ה יּוֹם מ ל כּ ה גּ לוֹת נ ג לוֹת א ח ד ה ר ק ים. כא ו יּ אמ ר דּ ו ד, the vain fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!' 21 And David א ל-מ יכ ל, ל פ נ י י הו ה א שׁ ר בּ ח ר-בּ י מ א ב י said to Michal: 'Before God, who chose me above thy father, וּמ כּ ל-בּ יתוֹ, ל צ וּ ת א ת י נ ג יד ע ל-ע ם י הו ה ע ל- and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of God, over Israel, before God will I make merry. 22 And I י שׂ ר א ל; ו שׂ ח ק תּ י, ל פ נ י י הו ה. כב וּנ ק ת י עוֹד will be yet more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own מ זּ את, ו ה י ית י שׁ פ ל בּ ע ינ י; ו ע ם-ה א מ הוֹת of, sight; and with the handmaids whom thou hast spoken א שׁ ר א מ ר תּ, ע מּ ם א כּ ב ד ה. כג וּל מ יכ ל, בּ ת- with them will I get me honour.' 23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death. שׁ אוּל, ל א-ה י ה ל הּ, י ל ד--ע ד, יוֹם מוֹת הּ. 15. And Naomi said unto her two daughters-in-law: 'Go, return each of you to her mother's house; the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. 16. Samuel II:1 11 Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him. 12 And they wailed, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of God, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.13 And David said to the young man that told him: Whence art thou? And he answered: I am the son of an Amalekite stranger. 14 And David said unto him: How were you not afraid to put forth thy hand to destroy God s anointed? 15 And David called one of the young men, and said: Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died 17And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,23 Saul and Jonathan, the lovely and the pleasant in their lives, even in their death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. 4

Samuel II 9 ג ו יּ אמ ר ה מּ ל, ה א פ ס עוֹד א ישׁ ל ב ית 3 And the king said: 'Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, שׁ אוּל, ו א ע שׂ ה ע מּוֹ, ח ס ד א ה ים; ו יּ אמ ר that I may show the kindness of God unto him?' And Ziba said צ יב א א ל-ה מּ ל, עוֹד בּ ן ל יהוֹנ ת ן נ כ ה unto the king: 'Jonathan hath yet a son, who is lame on his feet.' ר ג ל י ם. ד ו יּ אמ ר-לוֹ ה מּ ל, א יפ ה הוּא; 4 And the king said unto him: 'Where is he?' And Ziba said unto ו יּ אמ ר צ יב א, א ל-ה מּ ל, ה נּ ה-הוּא בּ ית the king: 'Behold, he is in the house of Machir the son of מ כ יר בּ ן-ע מּ יא ל, בּ לוֹ ד ב ר. ו יּ ב א Ammiel, in Lo-debar.' 6 And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came unto David, and fell on his face, מ פ יב שׁ ת בּ ן-י הוֹנ ת ן בּ ן-שׁ אוּל, א ל-דּ ו ד, ו יּ פּ ל ע ל-פּ נ יו, ו יּ שׁ תּ חוּ; ו יּ אמ ר דּ ו ד and prostrated himself. And David said: 'Mephibosheth!'
