Every sinner is really in exile, banished to a remote corner of the heavens, dispersed into dozens of different chambers, fulfilling the prophecy that: God has scattered you among the nations. Exile means the absence of a home, and the sinner has lost his way from home. Though he may own magnificent palaces, the sinner has no real home. The curse that: God has scattered you among the nations, refers not only to a nation, but can also apply to the individual sinner. His capabilities, his spiritual powers, his emotions and his thoughts lack internal cohesion. He has no axis around which his personality revolves. For this person, repentance leads to ingathering the exiles, meaning the reunification of the personality which was shattered to smithereens by sin. R. Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, On Repentance, [ed. P. Peli], pp. 306-7. Repentance brings both peace and intense solemnity at one and the same moment. With a single point of its light, repentance contains a lofty and noble treasure. But this single glimmer also places before our eyes the responsibility of completing our teshuva. Repentance transforms all sins and all the accompanying terrors and spiritual torments into feelings of joy and comfort. For by thoughts of repentance a person is illuminated with a profound hatred of evil, and is overwhelmed by love of the good. So, beyond all intellectual calculation, a penitent person delights in joyful remorse. Such a person senses the divine delight that is a special gift for those who repent. This feeling is most precious, because it comes with the joy of heartbreak, and of crushing spiritual pain. Through repentance, one hears God s voice beckoning from the Torah, from every feeling in the heart, and from every creature in the world. And the desire for good grows ever stronger within. R. Yochanan: if this were not written in the Torah, it would be impossible to say. This verse means that the Holy One was enwrapped in a tallit like a prayer leader, and taught Moses the order of prayer. God said to Moses: Whenever Israel sins, they should recite this order before me, and I will forgive them. Ashamed, she pours out her heart. At the end of each stanza, she prays: Enough of this year, with all its curses. In the final stanza, the poet calls Israel to have courage and faith, to ascend to Zion and rebuild its desolate paths. This time the stanza ends: Let the new year begin, with all its blessings. 8
