During her lifetime, she was hailed as the "First Lady of Israeli Song." Born Naomi Sapir, Shemer penned music and lyrics to hundreds of songs, adapted well known songs to Hebrew, and set Hebrew poetry to music. She was born and raised in K vutsat Kinneret, a kibbutz that her parents had helped to found, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. In the 1950 s she served in the Israeli Defense Force's Nahal entertainment troupe and studied music at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem. Several of Shemer's songs (Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, Lu Y hi, Al Kol Eileh, and others) have the quality of anthems, striking deep national and emotional chords in the hearts of Israelis and Jews throughout the world. 6

8 PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors, bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us to channel our anger, So that it motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear, knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them. 10 Yaakov, or Jerry, Gladstone, a founding member of CBST, passed away at age 95 on Shabbat, May 4, in St Michael s Hospital, Toronto. He was surrounded by family members and friends who loved and cared about him. Many CBST members, who remember Yaakov from the earliest days of our community, ed messages to his niece Judy who read them to him. A graveside funeral was held on Sunday, May 5, in Toronto. A memorial service is at his assistedliving facility so all his fellow-residents can participate. Yaakov s strong passion for Israel and the Jewish people influenced CBST s supportive interest in Israel significantly. He enriched our Jewish cultural life by organizing participation in the Israel Day parade and directing such theatrical productions as Itzig Manger s Purimspiel, which became a favorite. When he left New York to return to Israel, a community party was held to wish him well. Members jokingly used that opportunity to exhibit their Yiddish in a song composed for the occasion, Yankel furt avek. Yaakov and Bill Fern became close friends soon after they met on a Friday evening in the very first months of CBST. Over the years they took many trips abroad together, often searching out Jews in less traveled countries. One year Yaakov urged a search for descendants of secret Jews in Portugal. He and Bill found them in several remote northern towns and in Oporto. Yaakov made friends with many, and through his influence, the Oporto group eventually migrated to Israel. When he was young and living in Israel, Yaakov had been mentor and teacher for years to Ethiopian Jewish children refugees, and earlier still, he was guide to Moroccan Jewish youth as they escaped from North Africa and then mentored them in Israel. This time he taught mentally and emotionally challenged children in Tel Aviv schools. He eventually returned to Toronto to be near family and lived in an assistedliving facility. There he once again changed lives. Repeating his success at CBST and using his selftaught theater skills and passion for Jewish culture, he cast and directed his fellow residents in theater presentations that he wrote and directed to celebrate Jewish holidays. He helped countless people find everyday living once more interesting and rewarding. His final production, less than a year ago when he had turned 95, featured a new idea. This time the residents would honor their caregivers. He even cast some of the caregivers in the show. The performance proved to be hugely and unexpectedly popular. The audience overfilled the room -- the greatest success of them all. Once again, Yaakov had made a significant positive difference and changed lives.
