A land which devours its inhabitants And flows with milk and honey and blue skies, Sometimes itself stoops to plunder The sheep of the poor. A land sweetened by her clods of soil, Yet all her seashores are salty, Like the tears of those who, through their love, Gave all they had to give. The white squill plant is again in bloom There, on the lonely road; The jasmine will bring back the fragrance Of fields lost in time. Autumn returns with heavy clouds To enfold all her gardens in gray, And the winter will draw itself down Over those whom its weeping eyes have guarded. The white dove has grown old, She has been standing there for years, You know. The white dove has grown old, Other birds her age already have grandchildren. / Hayonah Hal vanah / The White Dove ה יּוֹנ ה ה לּ ב נ ה Words: Yehonatan Gefen (Born 1947) The white dove has grown old, Too many wars stand before her in line The white dove has grown old, Her olive branch has dried up at its root. The white dove has grown old, They have let her come down from the flags To find a resting place for herself in the garden. The white dove has grown old, The time has come for her to have a hatchling, The song of a dove. The white dove has grown old The white dove has grown old, And every day she becomes less white And more pale The white dove has grown old, Tell her that the waters have run out And that she is free. The white dove has grown old You and I will change the world. You and I, then all will follow. Others have said it before me, but no matter. You and I will change the world. You and I will try from the beginning. It will be tough for us, but no matter. It's not so bad. Others have said it before me, but nevertheless, you and I will change the world. There is still a white sail on the horizon, Opposite a heavy black cloud. All that we ask for - may it be. And if in the evening windows, The light of the holiday candles flickers. All that we seek - may it be. May it be, may it be, please, may it be. All that we seek - may it be. With these hands I haven't yet built a village, Haven't yet found water in the middle of the wilderness, Haven't yet painted a flower, I haven't yet discovered how the path leads me, and where I am going. During her lifetime, she was hailed as the "First Lady of Israeli Song." Born Naomi Sapir, Shemer penned music and lyrics to hundreds of songs, adapted well known songs to Hebrew, and set Hebrew poetry to music. She was born and raised in K vutsat Kinneret, a kibbutz that her parents had helped to found, on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. In the 1950 s she served in the Israeli Defense Force's Nahal entertainment troupe and studied music at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem. Several of Shemer's songs (Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, Lu Y hi, Al Kol Eileh, and others) have the quality of anthems, striking deep national and emotional chords in the hearts of Israelis and Jews throughout the world. 6

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors, bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us to channel our anger, So that it motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear, knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them. Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy, that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes, its leaves are always green (Jeremiah 17:8). Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts, but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws. May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth. May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism, discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since before this nation was born. Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24) Rabbi Ayelet Cohen

Yaakov, or Jerry, Gladstone, a founding member of CBST, passed away at age 95 on Shabbat, May 4, in St Michael s Hospital, Toronto. He was surrounded by family members and friends who loved and cared about him. Many CBST members, who remember Yaakov from the earliest days of our community, emailed messages to his niece Judy who read them to him. A graveside funeral was held on Sunday, May 5, in Toronto. A memorial service is at his assistedliving facility so all his fellow-residents can participate. Yaakov s strong passion for Israel and the Jewish people influenced CBST s supportive interest in Israel significantly. He enriched our Jewish cultural life by organizing participation in the Israel Day parade and directing such theatrical productions as Itzig Manger s Purimspiel, which became a favorite. When he left New York to return to Israel, a community party was held to wish him well. Members jokingly used that opportunity to exhibit their Yiddish in a song composed for the occasion, Yankel furt avek. Yaakov and Bill Fern became close friends soon after they met on a Friday evening in the very first months of CBST. Over the years they took many trips abroad together, often searching out Jews in less traveled countries. One year Yaakov urged a search for descendants of secret Jews in Portugal. He and Bill found them in several remote northern towns and in Oporto. Yaakov made friends with many, and through his influence, the Oporto group eventually migrated to Israel. When he was young and living in Israel, Yaakov had been mentor and teacher for years to Ethiopian Jewish children refugees, and earlier still, he was guide to Moroccan Jewish youth as they escaped from North Africa and then mentored them in Israel. This time he taught mentally and emotionally challenged children in Tel Aviv schools. He eventually returned to Toronto to be near family and lived in an assistedliving facility. There he once again changed lives. Repeating his success at CBST and using his selftaught theater skills and passion for Jewish culture, he cast and directed his fellow residents in theater presentations that he wrote and directed to celebrate Jewish holidays. He helped countless people find everyday living once more interesting and rewarding. His final production, less than a year ago when he had turned 95, featured a new idea. This time the residents would honor their caregivers. He even cast some of the caregivers in the show. The performance proved to be hugely and unexpectedly popular. The audience overfilled the room -- the greatest success of them all. Once again, Yaakov had made a significant positive difference and changed lives. Now you can! CBST, in partnership with Seeking Asylum and Finding Empowerment (SAFE) and New Sanctuary Coalition (NSC), is launching its own weekly immigration clinic, part legal clinic and part pro se, which will focus on LGBTQ immigrants. Volunteers will assist people who are representing themselves (pro se, in legal terms) to complete asylum applications and find out what additional legal services are available to them. If you have attended a clinic training, either at CBST or through New Sanctuary, or if you have immigration clinic experience, we invite you to join us. If you have not yet been to a clinic training, contact Rabbi Marisa James (rabbijames@cbst.org) to find out about upcoming training sessions, and if you are a lawyer, contact Lee Jason Goldberg (leejgoldberg@gmail.com) to find out about upcoming immigration CLEs: we need both lawyer and non-lawyer volunteers, especially Spanish speakers who can translate. Volunteer for Iftar at ICNYU This year, CBST will help prepare and serve Iftar, the evening meal that ends the daily fast, at the Islamic Center of NYU (ICNYU) every week during Ramadan. The remaining dates are: Monday, May 13; Tuesday, May 21; Thursday, May 30; and Saturday, June 1.
