1 Introduction to Siftei Ḥakhamim My exclusive purpose is [to include] what is necessary to [understand] Rashi. But in any case in which Mizrachi or the author of Nachalat Yaakov or any of the other [commentators] veer off in their esteemed [commentaries] and extraordinary expertise with questions and Talmudic casuistry as they do, for instance in Parshat Mishpatim and other places I did not insert myself between these great luminaries. I recorded only what serves the interest in understanding the peshat of Rashi. 2

And he turned aside, and sat down. 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said: 'Sit ye down here.'
