He said to the woman, Did God really say, You shall not eat of any tree of the garden? 3:2 The woman said to the serpent, Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat, 3 but of the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. 3:4 The serpent said to the woman, You won t die, 3:5 for God knows that on the day you eat it, your eyes will open, and you will be like God, and know good and evil. 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree s (fruit) was edible, and that it was delightful to the eyes, and that it was pleasantly stimulating, she took of its fruit, and ate it; and she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. 3:7 The eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. 3:8 They heard the voice of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the middle of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.

30 IN THE BEGINNING GENESIS 3: THE J KERNEL CONTINUED 3:9 Yahweh God called to the man, and said to him, Where are you? 3:10 The man said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. 3:11 God said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? 3:12 The man said, The woman whom you gave me to be with, she gave me of the tree, and I ate (from the fruit). 3:13 Yahweh God said to the woman, What is this you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate (from the fruit). 3:14 Yahweh God said to the serpent, Because you have done this,you are cursed more than all livestock and wild animals. On your belly you shall crawl, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. 3:15 I will cause there to be enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel. 3:16 To the woman he said, I will increase your travails whilst you are in childbirth. Bearing children will be painful. You will covet your husband, and he will rule over you. 3:17 To Adam he said, Because you listened to your wife and ate of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it, the ground is cursed because of you. You will eat of it all the days of your life. 3:18 It will yield thorns and thistles to you; and you will eat the grass of the field. 3:19 You will eat bread by the sweat of your brow, until you return to the ground, for it is there you originated. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return. 3:20 The man called his wife Eve, because she was the mother of all living things. 3:21 Yahweh God made coats from (animal) skins for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them. 3:22 Yahweh God said, Behold, the man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. 32 IN THE BEGINNING The depiction of God in this chapter is quintessentially J. The Lord God is afraid of what Adam might do now that he has eaten from the Tree of Knowledge which, according to Chapter 2, existed in the Garden of Eden independent of the Lord God s will and thus He banishes Adam and Eve from the Garden and places a guard at its entrance. The Lord s fear may be difficult for modern readers of the Bible to grasp. If the Lord is all-powerful, then what does He have to fear from human beings?
