Only Yesterday S. Y. Agnon מפגש - Encounter 2
Delicate Confession Nathan Zach I was born to be delicate. Fact: I have soft hair. You want to check? Be my guest, My shampooed head is exposed to your gaze. Please excuse The little bald patches. They re just The ravages of time. I was born to be delicate. As it happens My parents decided they should emigrate To a country that is not delicate. They did not decide in haste, They consulted with everyone. Even Hitler supported their decision, He said it was very sensible. That s how someone born to be delicate Came to a country that is not delicate. You tell me What choice did I have? I still comb my hair With a delicate comb, brush my teeth, lose my hair, send my clothes To the cleaners. I never insult the neighbors except when There's no choice. It s all a mistake, they said, a terrible mistake has been made. I myself Make do with shouting in my sleep. Do you think it will help? 3
Don t make me laugh. I m a serious person If I had not been cursed by the generation, I mean my generation, I would have a crushing answer for you But maybe it wouldn t be delicate.

Song of the Land Asher Reich High from a penthouse you can t see The beauty of the land for which we were killed. Standing upright I bless this ground I live on her clods of earth, I am lengthened in the abundance of her shadows This thrilling earth for which I am a living wall A walkway and a canopy over her, my life is bound up with her Every breath is for her. This is the earth upon which I shed my blood, treading out my days in silence Anointing her with the splendor of my seed after me. Earth. Upon which I tread And silence the pain of her wounds, cavity by cavity. This is the land where I am a remnant and a refugee 6 Living in desolation above her, gradually fading
To Live in the Land of Israel Aryeh Sivan ) To the memory of Zvi Hurvitz:Pioneer, commander, and bereaved father. To be cocked like a rifle, the hand clutching a pistol, to walk in a closed, harsh line, even after the cheeks are filled with dust, and the seared flesh is fallen away, and the eyes can no longer focus on a target. There is a saying: a loaded gun is bound to fire. Not true. In the Land of Israel, anything can happen: a broken pin, a spring rusted through, or, the sudden cancellation of your orders, without explanation, 7

In our kibbutz there was no synagogue But erev Shabbat was a different time, special: After a warm shower, We were all dressed in white shirts that had arrived all ironed from the communal laundry And on erev Pesach We reaped the new wheat The Haver who played the great Cohen had asked: Did the sun set? And we all responded It did it did and he asked again: shall I reap? And we all responded: reap! Reap! Then we gathered to celebrate the Seder And we were all together We did not think that what we had done was Jewish We did not think that it was a good reason to be proud. In My Shoes Dan Almagor For some people a Palestinian is Yasir Arafat, A youth throwing a Molotov cocktail at a bus, A boy hurling taunts at soldiers and cursing their mothers. When you say Palestinian to me, I think of Walid. The only Palestinian I know and who knows me, And with whom I converse (in my language, of course). He is thirty or so, married with children, Has a pleasant smile and speaks passable Hebrew. An intelligent fellow, with a degree in accounting Who reads for pleasure classical Arab poetry, Philosophy and religious works. He has a good sense of humor and he s an optimist. I wish I had more friends like him. He uses his education in our local supermarket, Weighing vegetables and making home deliveries. In his spare time he washes cars or cleans apartments in our neighborhood, as many hours as possible. He has a family to support and he may not be able to come tomorrow. There might be a curfew. Or he might find himself inside like his brother Six months administrative detention without trial. Every day he has a story to tell. Minor incidents, not what you would call atrocities. His identity card was torn up by a reserve soldier for no particular reason. Trucks turned up suddenly with soldiers without uniforms and loaded a few of his cousins -- (our cousins). Some people think of Yasir Arafat or Abu Nidal when you mention Palestinians. I think of Walid. When we tactfully offered Walid parcels of secondhand clothes for his relatives in the village He accepted gratefully without taking offense. How strange to think that someone, somewhere In Walid s village near Nablus, Is wearing my shoes now. Once, not so very long ago, I was in his shoes. 14
